Our Wood Window Manufacturing Process

Last Updated: 12 July 2024

Manufacturing wood windows is a specialist process involving precision technology and highly skilled personnel. At GB Joinery, we have extensive experience in the wood window manufacturing industry. We work closely with building contractors to create bespoke windows, custom designed to all kinds of specifications.

To give you an idea of what’s involved in the process, here are the steps that all our wood windows go through from start to finish.

  1. Timber processing

At the GB Joinery workshop, large sections of high-quality timber are carefully stored horizontally on battens to protect against warping. A member of our skilled team will select several pieces of timber and cut the thresholds to the required size. They will then sand down the cut timber to remove any imperfections and rough edges.

  1. Frame assembly

The sections of cut and sanded timber are now sent to the profiling machine to create the desired window shape and style. Once profiled, a mortice machine is used to enable the frames to slot together. The frames are then both mechanically fixed and glued together to maximise strength and durability.

  1. CNC machining

When the glue has set, the window frame is sent to the CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine for any precision cuts or alterations. CNC technology is extremely accurate and is used to cut out spaces for locks and hinges. By using CNC technology, our wood windows can reach a level of accuracy that would be impossible with manual cutting methods.

  1. Treating, sanding, and finishing

Once the frames are complete, they are re-sanded and treated with a protective sealant. They are then caulked around the joints and sanded again to create a smooth finish ready for paint application.

  1. Priming and painting

At GB Joinery, all our windows are primed and painted on site at our dedicated paint shop. Two layers of primer are generally used for protection and to create a good surface for paint adhesion. Once the primer has dried, the frames are then spray painted with the final colour of choice.

  1. Installing hardware and glazing

The final part of window manufacturing involves fitting all hardware, handles, and hinges onto the window frame. The windows are then glazed and sealed with a high-performing silicone sealant to create a watertight seal around the glass.

  1. Cleaning and final checks

The finished windows are now thoroughly cleaned (both the frames and glass) and checked against the original specifications to ensure accuracy and quality has been met.
